Live Report : INSOMNIUM, OMNIUM GATHERUM & CHARIOTS OF THE GODS (Ottawa)

Au Canada, peut-être plus qu’ailleurs, la fête du travail symbolise la fin de l’été. L’été n’était pas cependant sur le point d’abandonner la bataille, avec une chaleur accablante comme si le soleil avait décidé d’y mettre fin en s’immolant.

J’ai alors cherché refuge, en descendant au plus sombre du club « The Ritual ». C’était encore plus chaud à l’intérieur et ça s’apprêtait à devenir un enfer de corps suants et agités. Comme je découvrirai ensuite, cette chaude obscurité infernale s’apprêtait à se transcender dans les cieux du death metal mélodique.

Les premiers à mettre les pieds sur scène, étaient les représentants régionaux CHARIOTS OF THE GODS et ils sont le groupe local le plus étonnant que j’ai jamais vu à Ottawa. Dirigé par leur nouveau frontman Chris Therien, le quintette s’est lancé en exécutant leurs mélodies et prouesses techniques tout en flottant au-dessus d’une batterie palpitante. J’ai beaucoup aimé ce groupe, ils ont un bel avenir devant eux et j’ai hâte de les voir à nouveau et de mettre la main sur leur nouvel album quand il sortira l’année prochaine.

Ensuite, il était temps pour les légions de Finlande d’entrer en scène. Je n’étais pas très familier avec OMNIUM GATHERUM et j’ai volontairement évité d’écouter leur musique avant le concert. Il y a quelque chose de magique à faire connaissance avec un groupe tout en les voyant jouer en Live pour la première fois. Les six membres du groupe sont arrivés en force. La basse pesante a alors formé les bases alors que les claviers et les riffs enflammés de guitares se sont alors mis à danser avec le chant, penchant définitivement vers le côté lourd du death mélodique. Le frontman, Jukka Pelkonen étant stoïque sur le devant de la scène, forçant même certains chants lourds et puissants jusqu’à imprégner la foule jusqu’aux os.

INSOMNIUM fût ensuite incroyable, et je suis certain que beaucoup de fans présents seraient surpris d’apprendre que ce quatuor de melo-death, qui était en face d’eux, était en fait constitué de deux membres temporaires. Le frontman original, Niilo Sevänen et le guitariste Ville Friman, n’avaient pu être de la tournée, dû à de graves problèmes personnels qui ont presque poussé le groupe à annuler cette tournée nord-américaine.

De la force, à ensuite découlé de la détermination comme si ces gars-là était là pour botter des culs, malgré ces obstacles. Et ils l’ont fait. Nick Cordle a prit la relève à la guitare, ce qui bien sûr n’est pas mal du tout! Mais ce gars-là avait déjà fait ses preuves avec Arch Enemy. Le frontman remplaçant, Mike Bear directement venu des Etats-Unis, avait l’air tout à fait comme à la maison, chantant les paroles avec passion tout en y mettant son timbre de voix incroyable et cru sur celles-ci, tout au long du concert. Le groupe a ouvert avec les trois premiers titres de leur dernier album, « Shadows Of The Dying Sun » avant de naviguer habilement dans une étonnante séquence de titres qui remontaient jusqu’à leur premier album, parût en 2002.

Une belle soirée avec trois groupes exceptionnellement forts, partageant la scène, dans l’air frais de la nuit qui était comme un rêve délirant, frénétique, incroyable.

Shadows Over North America Tour: Insomnium and Omnium Gatherum with Chariots of the Gods

In Canada, perhaps more so than elsewhere, Labor Day weekend is the symbolic end of summer. On this day however, summer wasn’t about to give up without a fight, it was sweltering as though the Sun decided to end it quickly and self-immolate.

I sought shelter, descending into the dark underbelly of the Ritual Nightclub. It was even hotter inside and was about to become an inferno of sweaty, flailing bodies. As I’d soon discover, this hellish-hot gloom was about to transcend into melodic death heaven.

Bursting onto the stage first were regional representatives Chariots of the Gods and they were the most amazing local opener I’ve ever seen in Ottawa. Led by newly anointed front-man Chris Therien, the five-piece got straight to work flexing their melodies and technical chops, floating skilfully above the pulsating drums. I seriously dug this band, they have a bright future ahead of them and I look forward to seeing them again and grabbing their new album due out next year.

Next it was time for the legions from Finland to represent. I was not very familiar with Omnium Gatherum and intentionally avoided ‘listening-up’ on the band before the show. There is something magical about getting to know a band for the first time by soaking in their live performance. The six band members came out swinging. Pounding bass riffs formed the groundwork while soaring lead guitar riffs and keyboards danced with the growling vocals. They were definitely on the heavier side of melodic. Front man Jukka Pelkonen was stoic at the front of the stage, belting out some serious doomy and powerful vocals that pervaded out into the crowd, and into their bones.

Insomnium were amazing, I’m sure a lot of fans there, would be surprised to learn that this tight melo-death four piece in front of them actually had two stand-in members on the stage. Regular frontman Niilo Sevänen and axeman Ville Friman are tending to serious personal issues back home that almost saw this North American jaunt cancelled.

Iron willed determination emanated from the stage, like these guys were here to kick some serious ass, despite the odds. And they did. Nick Cordle filled in on guitar, which sure doesn’t hurt matters, that guy has shredded faces off before at Arch Enemy shows. Stand-in frontman, Mike Bear out of the USA, looked entirely at home, belting out lyrics with passion while putting his amazing, raw stamp on it all the while. The band opened with the first three tracks off their latest effort, Shadows of a Dying Sun before adeptly navigating an amazing sequence of tracks delving all the way back to their debut album from 2002.

A great night with three exceptionally strong bands sharing the stage, ascending into the cooler night air was like coming out of a delirious, frenzied, amazing dream.
